Wales

Wales is a country of dramatic mountains, windswept coastline, deep green valleys, traditional market towns and charming seaside resorts. Known as a 'Land of Castles' the countryside is dotted with romantic ruins and well-preserved medieval fortresses. Other attractions include grand stately houses, great gardens, little steam train journeys and of course, the three National Parks of Snowdonia, Pembrokeshire and the Brecon Beacons.

The country is divided into three main regions. The south, home to the cosmopolitan capital city of Cardiff, offers miles of unspoiled coastline and countryside. Mid-Wales, the green and rural heart of the country dotted with historic towns and villages is the quietest region while in the north lies Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in England and Wales, and a string of attractive seaside resorts. Here, you will also find the less touristy Isle of Anglesey, reached by bridge across the Menai Straits, and the Llyn Peninsula, both Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The Welsh people are a Celtic race, with their own language still being taught in school and spoken in many areas of the country today. Well-known for their love of music and lyricism, the tradition of the eisteddfod, a gathering for bards and singers held throughout Wales, dates back to the 12th century. The annual International Musical Eisteddfod, a six-day event featuring choirs and dancers from all over the world, takes place in Llangollen in early July.
